Privacy Policy

Affiance ("we", "us") helps couples and families plan and fund events such as weddings: you build a budget, record pledges and cash contributions from family and friends, keep a guest list, and share your budget with others. This policy explains what information we collect through the Affiance website and the Affiance mobile app, how we use it, who can see it, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

Information you give us when you create an account

• Your Budget ID (your username) and password. Passwords are stored in hashed form; we cannot see them.
• Your first and last name, email address and phone number.

Information you add to your budget

• Your budget heading and subheading (often the couple's names and the event date and venue).
• Budget sections and items, costs, quantities and service providers.
• An image you choose to show on your budget, if you upload one.
• The thank-you messages you set up to be sent to people who pledge or contribute.

Information about other people that you record

When you record a pledge, a cash contribution or a guest, you may add that person's name, email address, phone number, amounts pledged or paid and payment dates. People visiting a shared budget can also make a pledge themselves, giving the same details. If you add information about someone else, please make sure they are happy for you to do so.

Information collected automatically

• Session cookie (website): a cookie that keeps you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies.
• Device storage (mobile app): the app stores your Budget ID and a session identifier on your device so you stay signed in. Signing out removes them.
• Technical information: like most online services, our servers and hosting provider may record basic technical details such as your IP address and the time of a request, used to keep the service running and secure.

2. How we use your information

• To run your account and show you your budget, pledges, contributions and guest list.
• To send the thank-you emails and SMS messages you set up, and messages that include a link to your budget.
• To notify you by SMS when someone pledges on your budget.
• To send account emails such as password reset links.
• To suggest budget sections, items and service providers. These suggestions come from our own catalogue; your budget is not sent to any outside service to produce them.
• To create a PDF of your budget when you ask for one.
• To respond to feedback and support requests you send us.

We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

3. Who can see your budget

What visitors to a shared budget can see

• Your budget heading, subheading and image, its sections and items, costs and service providers, and the total amounts pledged and contributed.
• The pledges recorded on it: each pledger's name, the amounts pledged and paid, and collection dates.
• The text of the thank-you messages you have set up.

What visitors cannot see

• Anyone's contact details: not yours, and not the email addresses or phone numbers of pledgers, contributors or guests.
• Individual cash contributions and the people who made them, and your guest list. These are only available after signing in.

You choose who receives your share link. Keep your Budget ID private if you do not want others to view your budget. If you pledge on someone's budget, your name and pledge amount will be visible to anyone they share it with.

4. Service providers we use

We share information only with providers that help us operate Affiance, and only what they need:

• SparkPost — delivers our emails (thank-you messages, password resets).
• Africa’s Talking — delivers our SMS messages.
• Linode (Akamai) — hosts our servers and database.
• ShareThis — provides the social share buttons on shared budget pages on our website. ShareThis may collect information about your visit in line with its own privacy policy.
• Google Fonts — supplies the fonts on our website; your browser requests them directly from Google.

When you use "Export to WhatsApp" or "Share Budget" in the mobile app, the information is passed to the app you choose (such as WhatsApp) and handled under that app's own privacy policy. We may also disclose information if required by law.

5. Mobile app permissions

• Photos: only if you choose to upload a budget image. We use only the photo you select.
• Sharing and files: used to save or share your budget PDF and share links when you ask.

6. How long we keep information

We keep your account and budget information for as long as your account exists. Pledges, contributions and guests you remove are deleted from your budget. To have your account and all of its information deleted, use our account deletion page: we email a confirmation link to the address on your account, and once you confirm we delete your account, budget, pledges, cash contributions and guest list within 30 days. If you cannot use that page, email us at the address below.

7. Security

We take reasonable steps to protect your information, including hashing passwords. No online service can be completely secure, so please use a strong password and do not reuse it on other sites.

8. Your rights

Under Uganda's Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019, and similar laws elsewhere, you can ask to see the information we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted, and you can object to how we use it. You can edit most of your information yourself in the app. For anything else, contact us below. If you are a pledger, contributor or guest recorded on someone else's budget, you can contact us too.

9. Children

Affiance is not intended for children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect their information.

10. Changes to this policy

If we make significant changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, let you know in the app or by email.
